Letter to a Trumper: Please Don’t Vote for Trump

Colin McNamara
21 min readOct 25, 2020

I don’t write about politics and I don’t really write letters. I wrote one letter, about a year ago, to convince a friend to vote in this election (he had never voted in ANY election…and this year he is!) but that was pretty much it. As 2020 has progressed and the consequences of electing Donald Trump has weighed on the nation, I could not help but write one more. If you’re reading this, this letter probably isn’t “for you”…it’s actually more for the Trumpers in your life. I was inspired by a number of open letters floating around out there and letters like this one:

If you know someone (a true “Trumper” or just a conservative who has always just voted Republican) that is considering voting for Trump, please take a look at the sections below. I tried to organize by topic so it’s easier to find the items that would be most compelling for that Trumper in your life. Send them the paragraph, the link, this article, whatever — add your own twist or don’t change a thing. Just try reaching out and see what happens…you might change their mind! I’ve also tried to include as many sources as possible so that they can read the articles themselves. Enjoy and please vote!

Quick note: several of the block quotes were taken directly from another open letter that I found to be very well-written and pretty thoroughly takes Trump down (Former Republican National Security Officials for Biden). I tried to cite it explicitly after each instance but if you have the time, I highly recommend reading it in its entirety — the link is below:

Foreign Policy

Trump has damaged US standing

Donald Trump has gravely damaged America’s role as a world leader. Trump has disgraced America’s global reputation and undermined our nation’s moral and diplomatic influence. He has called NATO “obsolete,” branded Europe a “foe,” mocked the leaders of America’s closest friends, and threatened to terminate longstanding US alliances. Other global leaders, friends and foes alike, view him as unreliable, unstable, and unworthy of respect.

Attacking the Military

Donald Trump has disparaged our armed forces, intelligence agencies, and diplomats. Trump has attacked Gold Star families, scoffed at American prisoners of war, interfered in the military justice system, and embroiled our military in domestic politics. He has ridiculed US intelligence agencies and falsely branded our nation’s diplomats as the “deep state.”

Abandoning the Kurds, Disastrous Strategic Blunder

Trump does NOT understand foreign policy and does NOT understand the value of relationships that are not transactional. He doesn’t get the purpose of allies and why they are important. In an effort to show that he was bringing troops home, Trump withdrew 1,000 soldiers from the Syria-Turkey border (without consulting the Pentagon or Congress), abandoning the Kurds and leaving a power vacuum filled by Russia. Per Rolling Stone: “ISIS, Russia, Iran, Syria, and Turkey are happy. America’s allies are not”.

Poor Leader: Trump is unfit to lead during a crisis

Donald Trump has shown that he is unfit to lead during a national crisis. Instead of rallying the American people and the world to confront the coronavirus, Trump has spent the past half year spreading misinformation, undermining public health experts, attacking state and local officials, and wallowing in self-pity. He has demonstrated far greater concern about the fate of his reelection than the health of the American people.

Anti-Democratic: Election Integrity

Donald Trump has solicited foreign influence and undermined confidence in our presidential elections. Trump publicly asked Russian president Vladimir Putin to assist his 2016 campaign, called on Chinese president Xi Jinping to “start an investigation” into his current political opponent, and pressured the president of Ukraine to act against his opponent. Citing exaggerated claims of voter fraud, he has challenged the integrity of this year’s election, even suggesting that it be postponed.

Anti-Democratic: Too Cozy with Dictators

Donald Trump has aligned himself with dictators and failed to stand up for American values. Trump has regularly praised the actions of dictators and human rights abusers. He proclaimed his “love” and “great respect” for North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un, endorsed “brilliant leader” Xi Jinping’s move to serve as China’s president for life, repeatedly sided with Vladimir Putin against our own intelligence community, and pronounced himself a “big fan” of Turkish president Recep Erdogan despite his crackdown on democracy.

Un-presidential: Childish and Immoral Actions

Donald Trump has dishonored the office of the presidency. Trump engages in childish name-calling, mocks the disabled, belittles women, persistently lies, peddles baseless conspiracy theories, and continually embarrasses Americans in the eyes of the world.

Anti-Democratic: Trump Divides, Never Unites

Donald Trump has divided our nation and preached a dark and pessimistic view of America. Trump consistently seeks to incite political, racial, and ethnic divisions, weakening our nation and delighting our adversaries. In contrast to Reagan’s vision of America as a “shining city on a hill,” Trump speaks of “American carnage,” pits Americans against each other, and stokes fears that “angry mobs” and “anarchists” are destroying our country.

Poor Leader: Mismanaged National Security

Donald Trump has imperiled America’s security by mismanaging his national security team. Trump has dismissed or replaced — often by tweet — the secretaries of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the Directors of National Intelligence and the FBI, three National Security Advisors, and other senior officials in critical national security positions, many because they refused to cover for his misdeeds or demonstrate sufficient personal loyalty.

Ex-Administration: Olivia Troye

Olivia Troye, an ex-aide to Vice President Mike Pence, has said she will vote for Joe Biden in November because of Trump’s “flat-out disregard for human life” in the handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Per Troye, Trump was more concerned about the economy and his reelection and that the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic cost lives.

Consistent with Trump’s inability to actually lead an effective pandemic response (let alone a nation), Troye said this: “The president’s rhetoric and his own attacks against people in his administration trying to do the work, as well as the promulgation of false narratives and incorrect information of the virus have made this ongoing response a failure,” she said in an interview.

Here are a few more quotes from her interview highlighting just how bad Trump is at being president:

“At some point, every single person on the task force has been thrown under the bus in one way or another. Instead of being focused on the task at hand, people were constantly wondering what was going to drop next or when you’re going to get reprimanded or cut out of a process for speaking out.”

“He spent more time about who was going to call Fox and yell at them to set them straight than he did on the virus.”

Ex-Trump Admin: Olivia Troye

Ex-Administration: John Bolton

John Bolton, the ex-National Security Advisor to Donald Trump, has been known in Washington as a policy hawk and a staunch Republican for as long as he’s been in politics. John Bolton worked with Donald Trump for 17 months and has, surprise-surprise, said he will NOT vote for Donald Trump. In his book, The Room Where It Happened, John Bolton explains in-detail all the reasons why Donald Trump is simply not fit to be president. Here are just some of the highlights.

First, Bolton confirmed the worst allegations of the Ukraine scandal for which Donald Trump was impeached and confirmed his view that it was a “drug deal”. Per Bolton: “the whole affair was bad policy, questionable legally, and unacceptable as presidential behavior.”

Next, Bolton revealed that Trump appealed to Xi Jinping (China’s Head of State) for political help. (I don’t think I should have to add my commentary but that is OBVIOUSLY below the office of the President). Bolton sums up his thoughts on Trump’s decision making: “I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my tenure that wasn’t driven by re-election calculations.”

Bolton, like many other ex administration officials, did not have much respect for Donald Trump’s knowledge of foreign policy, calling him “stunningly uninformed”.

Ex-Administration: James Mattis

James Mattis is a former Marine general and was the first Secretary of Defense under Donald Trump, serving from January 20, 2017 to January 1, 2019. Mattis was in the military for 50 years and is NOT and has sought to NOT be “political”: meaning that he has sought to not criticize his former boss publicly. That changed during the summer of 2020 when Donald Trump used U.S. Park Police and National Guard troops to clear Lafayette Square so that Donald Trump could take a photo-op. The troops used tear gas to clear peaceful protesters who were, ironically, protesting police brutality.

I encourage you to please read his statement. There is no other way to say this: this is important. A former general saw the use of federal troops being used for a purely political purpose and felt obligated to speak out. I found this paragraph to be pretty compelling:

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try.Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

Incompetent: Former Aides Think He’s Dumb

Trump just isn’t smart. He says he’s smart, but he isn’t. If you couldn’t tell by his rambling speeches at rallies, his poor decision making, or his horrible record as a “businessman”, just listen to his ex-subordinates. It is hard to find not just a politician but ANY person in such a prominent role that requires intelligence whose intellect has been so ruthlessly and almost uniformly insulted. As you read what some of the people who worked for him have said, ask yourself: are they really ALL lying? Is this ALL some political hit job? Or do these people (most of which attained some degree of success BEFORE working with Trump) really think he’s an idiot? Take a look…

Jim Mattis (former Secretary of Defense) said that Trump had the understanding of a fifth or sixth grader.

John Kelly (former White House Chief of Staff) called Trump an “idiot” as well as “unhinged”.

Steve Mnuchin (Treasury Secretary) and Reince Priebus called him an idiot.

Gary Cohn (former economic advisor) called him “dumb as shit”.

H.R. McMaster (former national security advisor) called Trump a “dope” and an “idiot”.

Rex Tillerson (former Secretary of State) called Trump a moron.

The list goes on and on. Again, are they all lying and trying to “bring Trump down” after they left or were fired from the administration? Obama, Bush, Clinton, etc. have all fired people — NONE of them have had this many people call their former boss a moron/idiot/dope like this.

Corrupt: Trump Surrounds Himself with Criminals

I’ll describe exactly why Trump himself is a criminal later. For now, I’ll just focus on the company he keeps. He is literally surrounded by criminals. Many of his associates have been charged or convicted of crimes. And I’m not talking about parking tickets. These aren’t “process crimes”. This isn’t the “Deep State” staging a resistance. These are real crimes for which several of them have been put in prison. This is serious. And not just because it speaks to the character of the people that Trump associates with but because many of them have broken the law to help Trump! This is the cast of characters I’m talking about: Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, Michael Flynn, Rick Gates, Geroge Nader, George Papadopolous. Read the link below for details…

Poor Leader: Trump Failed the COVID Test

Trump has done a terrible job with the coronavirus. Since the beginning, the Trump administration’s response has been incompetent, unscientific, political, unempathetic, unfocused, and chaotic. Like so many criticisms of Trump, it is hard to know where to begin.

First, Trump KNEW that the virus was bad. As the taped conversations with Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward reveal, Trump was briefed on the severity of the coronavirus. This wasn’t just a flu and it wouldn’t just target the old — Trump knew it was bad AND that it was contagious. On the tapes, Trump said: “You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed. And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flus.”

When you hear that Trump knew and then chose to lie to the American people and pretend that it would just “go away”, do you really think it showed good leadership? Did he really avoid a panic by pretending that this deadly virus didn’t exist? There are only a few possibilities: #1 — Trump knew how bad the virus was and genuinely thought that it would go away, and that his best move was to put on a good face and “be calm”; or #2 — Trump told Woodward that it was bad in those conversations but that he didn’t really get it; he didn’t really understand its severity.

Trump is either a terrible leader and made a decision that was the opposite of what he needed to do OR he is an idiot and in one of the worst health crises since the Spanish Flu, 100 years ago, he failed to act. That’s it. He either can’t lead or can’t think — or both.

But you don’t have trust me. The New England Journal of Medicine has NEVER weighed in on a presidential election in its 200+ year history. But Trump’s handling of the coronavirus has been so bad, its Editorial Board posted an editorial demanding the removal of America’s current leadership (read: Trump). Please read it — it more clearly articulates the how and why America has done so poorly.

NEJM Calls for Trump Administration to be Voted Out

Immoral: Trump Has No Morals

“The president has no moral compass,” per Jim Mattis, Trump’s former Secretary of Defense. This theme of Trump lacking a moral compass can be seen throughout his life. A moral compass simply refers to a person’s ability to judge what is right and wrong and act accordingly. Trump’s compass always points to what is best for him. We don’t have to debate the usefulness of morality for a politician but conservatives USED TO believe that it was important for America’s leaders to be moral. Here are just a few of the many ways that Trump is anything but moral.

When Trump’s son, Baron, was four months old, Trump had an affair with Stormy Daniels, a porn star. Trump isn’t the first person to have had an affair (nor is this the first time Trump has cheated on one of his wives; just look up Marla Maples) but it doesn’t look good. What is worse is that he tried to pay her off to NOT tell her story, a possible campaign finance violation. One instance of immorality begets another…

Donald Trump is also a creep. Just look at what he has said about his own daughter, Ivanka:

“Don’t you think my daughter’s hot? She’s hot, right?”

“I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”

Who says that about their own daughter? Outside of his own family (god that’s gross to have to write that), Trump has been credibly accused of sexually assaulting several women. He has been credibly accused of rape. His appearance on Access Hollywood recorded Trump saying this:

“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”

See what I mean by no moral compass?

Trump’s wealth has allowed him to break the rules and has given him this sense that he doesn’t have to abide by them. He often brags about how smart he is but in Mary Trump’s book (his niece), she reveals that he paid a friend to take the SATs! The “very stable genius” paid someone to take the test…he just doesn’t care.

Again, morality is but one dimension we can rate politicians on but from just these basic examples, Trump clearly does not care about what is right or wrong.

Ex-Administration: John Kelly

John Kelly, Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security and then his Chief of Staff from July 2017 to January 2019, ALSO thinks he’s an idiot. This is consistent with many ex-members of Trump’s administration calling him an idiot, a moron, etc. John Kelly, a marine that attained the rank of general, has been less vocal than others like Jim Mattis, but he did say this:

“He’s an idiot. It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything. He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.”

Everyone Thinks He’s an Idiot

Corrupt: Trump University

The stories of entrepreneurs having multiple failures before hitting it big are all over the place. As are stories of serial entrepreneurs that create many successful business with a few failures here and there. To reduce Trump University to just another business failure would be wrong. Not because it wasn’t a failure (it was a MASSIVE failure), but it is actually best described as a scam.

Trump University was not only NOT a real university, it was barely educational. According to multiple lawsuits and insider accounts from ex-employees, Trump University’s main goal was to aggressively sell more courses like the “Gold Elite” seminar for $35,000. Trump U promised real estate secrets from “The Donald” and they instead got “hand-picked experts” and a picture next to a Trump cutout. Trump eventually had to settle and agreed to pay $25M to partially refund the clients that were scammed.

Actual, successful entrepreneurs don’t do this. Real entrepreneurs actually CARE about their reputation. This business, if Trump pursued it as a legitimate avenue for wealth creation, was poorly planned, executed, and immoral to its core. If it was just an auxiliary revenue stream that Trump didn’t care about, it shows that he doesn’t vet the people he does business with and doesn’t care what they do as long as they make money.

Trump University: It’s Worse Than You Think

Corrupt: Trump Foundation

Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates founded the Giving Pledge whereby wealthy people are encouraged to donate a substantial portion of their wealth to philanthropic causes. Not every billionaire has signed the pledge, and not every wealthy person has to or should be expected to sign it. Trump is no exception. But while it is no surprise that Trump did NOT sign the pledge, it should be expected that if he did have a charity, it should be used for that purpose. Enter: the Trump Foundation.

Now look, before you become “underwhelmed” by the dollar amounts here, just remember that this foundation is “for charity”. Do not fall into the trap of comparing the penalty Trump was slapped with, $2 million, and his net worth (he’s claimed everything from $3 — $10bn). It’s not about whether Trump “needed” this money, it’s about his complete indifference to what is right and what he should have done.

As mentioned before, Trump was ordered to pay $2 million to settle the allegations that he used that money for political purposes related to his presidential campaign. The settlement also required his adult children (Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric) to undergo training related to charitable organizations. Lastly, the settlement required that the foundation be dissolved.

What we don’t see in the settlement are all the allegations of self-dealing or simply using the foundation for purposes NOT related to charity. Trump was caught using $258,000 for his own legal problems. Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, claimed that Trump asked him to find someone to buy a portrait of himself (Trump) at auction and then reimburse them the $60,000 from the Trump Foundation.

Again, these aren’t “small” things just because the dollar amounts are insignificant relative to his net worth. Trump used funds from his own charity to pay for things that SHOULD BE insignificant for a true billionaire. If you were a billionaire, would you really abuse your own charity to pay for these things? Would you really pay someone $60,000 to buy a portrait, of YOU, and then steal that money from your own charity just to save $60,000? (Remember, in this scenario, you are a BILLIONAIRE — meaning your net worth is at least $1,000,000,000).

My point is that this is one more story classified under the “Trump Has No Morals” column. Trump will say that he’d never steal so little money because he’s a billionaire; that’s bullshit. He steals and then lies about it. He doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about the laws. He doesn’t care about what is “right”. He doesn’t care about the causes that this “charity” was supposed to support. He just doesn’t care. Please read the articles below for more if you don’t believe me.

Incompetent: Birtherism

Obama was born in America. That’s a fact. I’m not here to debate a fact. I’ve included Obama’s long-form birth certificate below if you absolutely need proof. I’m discussing birtherism here to illustrate how Trump’s appeal works. He lies about something (“Obama was not born in America…”) to make his base “feel good” (“…therefore he cannot be / is not a legitimate president.”) and doesn’t actually care about the truth. Trump uses these conspiracy theories, which absolutely do NOT belong in politics, for his own political gain. There are two general scenarios: (1) he believes these conspiracy theories, (2) he does NOT and knowingly abuses them, to the detriment of the entire system (and democracy as a whole).

Conspiracy theories have no place in American politics. Facts matter. At least, they should. Trump doesn’t care about any fact that differs with his world view. That is NOT a good foundation for the leader of the free world. Please read the links below for a general overview of birtherism and remember this is not only one more lie but also one more attempt to score cheap political points with false, inflammatory “information”.

Incompetent: Nuclear Bombs to Stop Hurricanes

Trump on hurricanes: “I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?” That is a real quote by Trump from someone in the room during a hurricane briefing. Let that sink in. In fact, here it is again: “I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?” Donald Trump actually suggested nuking hurricanes. I’m sure you saw it — it made the news that day! That was either a legitimate suggestion (and he is as dumb as that quote suggests) OR he doesn’t take the job seriously. In either scenario, he should not be president.

Scoop: Trump suggested nuking hurricanes to stop them from hitting U.S.

Ex-Administration: Dan Coats

Dan Coats, the former Director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration, thought that Putin had some form of kompromat on Trump as it appeared to be the only way to explain Trump’s behavior on Russia. Dan Coats is a member of the Republican party, was both a Representative and Senator, as well as Ambassador to Germany. Un-presidential: Republican Opposition to Trump

The number of Republicans that have publicly endorsed Joe Biden for president is unprecedented. These are people with conservative values and they would probably agree with you on many of the key policy views that the GOP and Dems fight about BUT they have publicly come out in support of Joe Biden. Now why is that? Is this really the “deep state” trying to bring Trump down? Is this really just the “GOP establishment” trying to deny the “will of the people”? Wake up. There is something unique about Trump in a very bad way. The reasons for all of these Republicans (or maybe now Ex-Republicans) may vary but some of the emerging themes are that he is un-presidential, immoral, and divisive.

From Defending Democracy Together (and their Republican Voters Against Trump project) to the Lincoln Project and 43 Alumni for Joe Biden, there are so many Republicans that believe that the nation could not withstand another 4 years under Trump. Please read what they have to say and why they think Trump is such a disaster.

Domestic Policy

Rule of Law: Damaged Rule of Law

Donald Trump has undermined the rule of law. Trump has compromised the independence of the Department of Justice, repeatedly attacked federal judges, and punished government officials who have sought to uphold the law. To protect himself from accountability, he has fired officials who launched investigations or testified against him, threatened whistleblowers, dangled pardons as incentives to stay silent, and blocked prison time for a political crony convicted of lying on his behalf. He has impugned journalists investigating his misconduct and has repeatedly denounced the press as the “enemy of the people.”

Attacking Immigrants

Donald Trump has attacked and vilified immigrants to our country. Trump routinely denigrates immigrants and inflames prejudices as he seeks support for his reelection. Despite America’s legacy as a nation of immigrants, he has demonized Americans who come from other countries, even telling members of Congress whose families immigrated to the United States to “go back” to the “crime-infested places” from which they came.
